It is time to plot my schedule.
You see, I am a haunter; and have been all my life.
Back home in the bay area of California, I started with costumes & home made make up, creating yard haunts, themed costume block parties & haunted garages running my way up the haunt tree.
Then in 1988 I did my first haunt for the School district. With a budget of $300 dollars we created an event that scared the grammar school children to tears, raising $700 for the PTA. In 1990 the San Carlos Educational Foundation hired me to put on an event to raise monies & awareness. I booked the Art Deco Movie Theater, themed it for the occasion, hired Tarot Card readers, got a band & got local wineries to donate to our cause. This event, named Ghouls for Schools was a smashing success! But by the 2nd year, I had done all I knew to do.
My next branch up the haunt tree was with a pro haunt. This opened a whole new world for me! For the next 12 years working with the same production company I dabbled in Fx make up, costumes, set dressing, design & logistics but was always drug back to the business end of the haunt. You know, all the boring details like where will it be, how will we get the props there, hire the staff, check the backgrounds, set up the database, record phone messages, set up offices on site, appease the Fire Marshall and insure opening night happens. Leave the acting to the flamboyant/artsy types, I like being in the office. I was sent travel to the conventions, gatherings & visited haunts across the US representing the company while gathering information, talent & haunt friends. What a sweet deal!
In 2005 I left Cali for the house of my dreams in Port Orchard, WA.
Moving away from all I knew & loved was difficult but exciting. What would the haunts be like in Washington? Would there be any local gatherings or conventions?
Finding the community sparse and disconnected, I started Haunted Puget Sound; a way to connect to the industry here in the PNW and collect information on local haunts conventions & gatherings. I am pleased to see the regional haunt community is growing & connecting at an astonishing rate.
So far this year I have attended the St Louis Haunt Show, where I ran into several WA haunters, 1st West Coast Haunters Convention, Crypticon-Seattle Horror Convention, Zombie Walk-Seattle (which broke the Guinness Worlds Record!) and joined Rain City Hearse Club with my 1982 Cadillac Deville Hearse “MiM”
Come October I will again be traveling the Puget Sounds/Portland area and will post my haunt reviews online as the season progresses.
