Haunted Puget Sound (hps) - What is the square footage of the haunt?
Curt Madden (cm) -Being about 3/4 open air it is hard to put into square feet but it is 3/4 of a mile walk and 3,000 sq ft indoors.
hps - How many scenes are there?
hps - How long did it take to set up?
cm -We work all year but we started set up at the park on September 21st this year - so 27 days of onsite set up.
hps - What is the actor to animatronics ratio?
cm - about 50 actors to each animatronic prop.
hps - How did you get interested in the haunt business?
cm -Made my first haunt at my house when I was 12 and then my kids got me into this one 20 years ago.
hps - What do you like best about producing a haunted house?
cm- -It gives kids that maybe don't play sports a place to express their abilities and learn new things. There have always been kids like me that don't fit in with the norm and we provide a family that watches out for them and really cares...some times that calls for tough love too. I don't run a business here I run a family.
hps - How did you pick your location?
cm -The Sammamish Rotary came to us about 10 years ago. We were producing the Scare House at the Des Moines marina at the time so we sent them enough help to get a start. 3 years later we had lost our location and moved in with them. Were it not for the Rotary, Parks Department and City's help we just couldn't do it. The lack of vandalism is a huge factor also.
hps - Is there any scene or scare that you're particularly impressed with this year?
cm - Yes there are. Our Full Scare area is very good this year. We have a great Castle and the Vortex is always new. Lots of great efforts this year and like I always say it will be all ready about Thanksgiving...LOL
hps - Any haunted houses of the past or movies that have inspired you?
cm - I get an idea from a movie or show once in a while. Paranormal Activity was one this year and the classics pop up now and again. I have a whole group of people that come up with most of the ideas. Video games are also a great source.
hps - Anything you'd like to add?
cm -I am always amazed at the amount of very hard work that these people do. They give up vacations and days off but more than that, they spend there own money, gas and almost every night off, some have even quit there jobs to make sure this show gets done. A fellow Haunter calls it the Monster... and once bitten the monster drags you around forever.
